Being in your twenties means so many exciting adventures to take, and so many fun milestones to meet in your life. But all of that also comes with needing money to fulfill said milestones and adventures…not so fun now is it.
Moving out three years ago, going through post-secondary school, holding a few full-time jobs and now entering a new phase of life (I recently got engaged!), a lot of budgeting has come into play.
It’s definitely not east to balance wanting to have fun in your twenties with trying to prepare yourself for the future, but over the years I’ve picked up some habits that really help with managing money (especially when you don’t have a lot of it!).

I started my blog on a whim one day in 2016 when I was stuck at home, bedridden with a concussion. Not sure what to expect, and without a clue what I was doing – but I started.
With blogging, you completely start from the bottom: square one. Personally, I knew nothing about blogging. Absolutely nothing. I have a friend who’s a YouTuber and does some vlogging as well, so that was basically the extent of my knowledge of this whole world on the Internet.
It all started with my obsession with Instagram, and seeing all of these mommy bloggers and their adorable kids and their sponsored posts – I’d love to be able to stay home like that with my kids (when I have them) and still make an income some day.
So I began following some of their blog posts, and they were great and all, but I wanted a little more than just some “day in the life” posts to read.
Through Instagram, and eventually Pinterest, I found this crazy world of blogs. And I loved reading other people’s posts.
In comes my third major concussion, leave from work, and the start of Maybe Jamie! The very first post I wrote explains how my blog came about.
But before my website launched, a looooooot (see how many o’s there are!?) of research was put in on how the hell to make a website. It was a lot of work and a lot of time, but with all my time off, I put in the effort and out came this little lovely blog Maybe Jamie!
Keeping on top of your game and getting all your shiz done can be so difficult when you add stress into the mix.
I know what it’s like to be stressed. I’m a student, I’ve worked full time and done school at the same time, I’ve dealt with grief, depression, anxiety, money issues, self-esteem issues and all of the above at the exact same time. It ain’t easy. And when you’re that stressed, all you want to do is curl into a ball in bed and do absolutely nothing. I get it.
But even though you feel like your life may be crumbling and beating you to a pulp, the world around you keeps going. And you need to too.
When it comes to being stressed (which is most of the time, lol) I’m decently good at doing the things that absolutely have to be done – like showing up to work and completing assignments on time. What I tend to skip out on is the other stuff like taking complete care of myself, spending time with friends, or putting more effort into my hobbies (aka blogging!).
And though they may not feel like absolute necessities, they’re still important! If they’re important to you deep down, they’re important to accomplish.
Moving out for the first time into an apartment is so exciting! You’re gaining that independence from your parents in a whole new and exciting way. More freedom, more space – more responsibility.
Once you’ve made that first step in deciding to make the big move, there’s a few steps you can take to make the transition a lot smoother.
Though it’s super exciting and all you want to do is pick a place and show up with the clothes on your back, there’s a few key things that should be covered first.
